Newfoundland was Britain’s first colony (1534) and Canada’s newest province (1949), following the historic vote by the Newfoundlanders to agree to join Canada following WW2. As a result, Newfie is a tad different than the rest of the country. Historically, it has the oldest ‘immigrant’ settlement ever discovered in the Americas (Gros Morne – a Viking village circa 1,000ad), the Grand Banks fishing area that stimulated exploration by European powers in the late 1400s, and the staging airfields that enabled tens of thousands of planes to be flown to Europe during ‘the war’. Touristically, you’ll never find friendlier people than Newfoundlanders, and the moose population exceeds that of any other part of the world. This is a double-sided map, with the island of Nfld. on one side, showing all roads and villages, and the French islands of St. Pierre et Miquelon, as well as an inset map of St. John’s (the capital, and a fascinating city to visit). The other side is unique. Labrador forms the wilderness part of the province. It has never been mapped properly by the government, so this is the first-ever map of this enormous and largely-unexplored part of Canada. There is a land connection from Baie Comeau in Quebec north to Labrador City, and an east-west dirt road to Goose Bay via the huge power station at Churchill Falls, and ferry services along the coast.
