Madeira is a Portuguese-associated island in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco. Volcanic in nature, the island is in the warm Gulf Stream, making it an ideal resort destination throughout the year. The capital is Funchal, and the airport is at Santa Cruz, to the east. The island has ferry connections with the Canary Islands and Morocco, but the usual way of reaching the island, and neighbouring Porto Santo, is by air. The road network is excellent and well-maintained. The reverse side of the waterproof sheet is an up-to-date map of southern Portugal, along with a detailed map of central Lisbon.
