Indonesia is a vast country of hundreds of inhabited islands that emerged out of the colonial Dutch East Indies. This map shows the entire country, with portions of nearby countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. Being a series of islands, sea communications are as important as air routes, and the islands are linked by numerous ferries, which are shown on our map. We also show the growing network of motorways joining land destinations, primarily on Java, but increasingly on Sumatra. Indonesia has such touristic treasures as Bali, Lombok, and Java, as well as more adventuresome off-the-beaten-path destinations such as Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and West Irian. Indonesia is the fourth most populated nation on earth and has a treasure trove of wonders to explore.
